Box 1272, Coarsegold, California 93614 Telephone: 559-641-LORD (641-5673) E-mail: State of the Church Delivered March 03 2013 State of the Church Many people have had questions about what is happening here at Sierra Springs since our brother Dean’s passing to glory. We want to speak to your questions and concerns and to give you a look into what we believe the Holy Spirit is doing among us. Let me begin with a brief history of Sierra Springs Church. Kathy and I met Dean and Diana at Yosemite Lakes Community church in 2004. We got to know and love each other as we participated in music and other ministries. It was after the summer of 2006 that we felt the Holy Spirit moving us onto other things and other places. In early 2007, Dean phoned me and asked if we would be interested in starting a church from scratch. We met together for several months envisioning what a great church might be like. We brought Daryl and Roberta Darst into the discussions. With Dean’s experience as a pastor in a number of churches, Daryl’s pastoral experience and many years as an Army chaplain, my experiences of interim-pastoring and evangelism and our wives many years of church leadership and ministry, we looked at what the modern church seemed to be missing and how we could improve upon it. We looked at the early church, specifically Acts 2:42, which reads “ The y were continually devoting the mselves to the apostles ’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.” The three couples prayerfully desired a church that would celebrate the Lord’s Supper every week, not cobbled onto the tail end of an occasional service. We saw a church led by spiritually gifted, educated men who loved the Lord, but would take no salaries. There would be no single pastor in charge, but a different leader would preach each week, thereby avoiding the modern American ‘cult of personality’ (or as Dean liked to call it, the “Pastor as Master” model). Sierra Springs Church has never had and will never have a senior pastor. Each member of the leadership team, whether male or female, has an equal voice. We envisioned a body of believers that did not need to pass an offering plate because we would not own property; instead, joyful, voluntary giving would go to missions all around the world and charitable giving in our community. Our communion time is vital to our worship and we honor multiple traditions by offering the cup as either wine or grape juice. We all came from different Christian backgrounds, but believed that respect for one another’s traditions is a hallmark of Christ’s love in our midst. In June of 2007, we began the work of Sierra Springs at the clubhouse in YLP. Later that year, we invited Dan and Audra to join our leadership team, as Dan had expressed his conviction that God was calling him to the military chaplaincy and began his seminary training. Although our attendance was sometimes only 6 or 8 people, we persevered. Over the next several years, we saw many people come to know Jesus in a new and powerful way. We celebrated baptisms, encouraged those with a gift of music to join in and participate. We held Bible studies, a Passover dinner, Christmas Eve & Easter Sunday services. We created a website that has been viewed by people from all over the country. We said goodbye to the Darsts as they moved to northern California. We sought God’s direction and asked the Cozbys and the Coffins to join the leadership team. Our church’s needs outgrew the facility we were in and we prayed that God would show us where we should go. Last spring, God gave us this building that we now rent. We rejoice in having a place of our own, where we can meet and celebrate together any day or time that we like. As we have grown, so has our mission outreach. We currently support 22 different missions and missionaries, all suggested by the people of Sierra Springs. We do not have membership, but all are welcome to participate as we reach out to our community and the world with the message of Jesus Christ. From the beginning, we have had one desire. It is to reach our community with the message of salvation through Christ Jesus. That will not change in spite of death, relocation, or upheaval. We will be implementing some new evangelistic campaigns in the coming months. We wait upon the Lord for His timing and direction. Some time ago, Kathy wrote this on our church website and it is still accurate. It is entitled: Why Are We Here? For a long time, I've wondered why people use the Internet. Most people say they get information, news, and sometimes, ideas from the Web. We have email, maybe we Tweet or meet on Facebook. Maybe you attend Sierra Springs Church and look here to see what we're doing. Or maybe you've just stumbled in here and are looking around, wondering what kind of people we are. For you who are looking for a church, maybe you want to know what we believe, when we meet, or why we meet . If you are looking for a group of extremely holy, morally superior people, let me assure you, you are looking in the wrong place! We are a bunch of sinners, depending only on Jesus. We have a laundry list of sins that would take much too long to list here. But we know the One who is Perfect, Righteous, Sinless. We know that He loves us like we are! We know that He sacrificed His life to pay for our wrongs. We've given Him our hearts and lives and He's making us into the people He wants us to be. And we want others to know Him and His love. And that's why we're here. If you’d like to know more, please feel free to talk to any of us on the leadership team. You are loved and welcome here at Sierra Springs!
